VOLVO CONSTRUCTION TRUSTS HUSS AS ITS STRATEGIC PARTNER FOR EXHAUST AFTERTREATMENT
Volvo Construction Equipment has entered into a strategic alliance with HUSS, LLC, a leading specialist in diesel particle filtration and systems for exhaust aftertreatment, to provide retrofit systems for Volvo construction equipment that will significantly reduce exhaust emissions … and make the air we breathe cleaner.
The strategic alliance is based on an agreement between Volvo headquarters in Sweden and HUSS headquarters in Switzerland which will make the HUSS systems also available for Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks, Volvo Penta, and Volvo Bus engine retrofit applications on a global basis.
The HUSS system is verified to meet California’s CARB Level 3 requirements (up to 85% particulate collection), and Volvo equipment owners using the system will be able to meet the “In-Use Off-Road Diesel Vehicle Rule” New York Local Law 77 and future pending legislation.
The HUSS retrofit system for Volvo equipment is capable of collecting up to 99% of diesel particulate matter (PM) emissions, exceeding substantially the CARB requirements. Volvo CE will begin its engine retrofit program immediately utilizing the HUSS MK exhaust aftertreatment system
“This is an important step for HUSS together with Volvo to expand our technology leadership in the American market” says Peter Bruenke, Director of HUSS LLC.

How the retrofit system works
The retrofit system is equipped with a HUSS Control Unit that constantly monitors filter function to precisely control diesel PM loading and regeneration. The system is integrated into the exhaust system of the vehicle to collect the diesel particulate matter. Active filter regeneration, through an integrated fuel burner system, typically takes place after approximately 8 to 10 operating hours and is completed in 5 to 35 minutes. Engine exhaust backpressure is set to Volvo requirements. In addition to the reduction of 99% PM, there is no increase of NO2 or other secondary emissions in the HUSS system. The HUSS technology is also adaptable to high-horsepower equipment (up to 700 hp) providing reliable double-filter installations.
Volvo Construction Equipment dealer training has begun
The Volvo Construction Equipment strategic alliance with HUSS provides direct access by Volvo customers to Volvo CE dealers and the technology, engineering and integration capabilities of approved emission reduction systems. Customers will have the security of knowing that the customized installations will not degrade their investment and will maintain maximum productivity.
Training of Volvo dealers on system evaluation, installation, and complete service and operating support will begin immediately with the Volvo Construction Equipment & Services dealer operation in California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. The training will be intensive to ensure the correct application of the technology developed by HUSS. Volvo dealers will be able to guide their customers through the selection of the proper retrofit system following expert evaluation of machine application and duty cycle. The retrofit system also meets the operating, quality, and reliability standards of Volvo Construction Equipment that have been established over many decades of construction equipment manufacture and service, and is fully backed by Volvo and HUSS.
A cleaner environment and substantial cost savings
The Volvo/HUSS emissions reduction retrofit system may be installed on all Volvo equipment in customer fleets, and, in addition to improving the environment, customers using the system may be able realize thousands of dollars in savings by keeping machines in their current fleets and avoiding the costly process of total engine replacement. They may also be eligible for state and federal grants and incentives by meeting ever-increasing emissions requirements.
