HUSS shows current system approaches, concepts and strategies for exhaust aftertreatment on CTI conferences
160 high-ranking experts of the exhaust aftertreatment branch meet on the 1st and 2nd of July 2008 in the Millenium hotel & resort Stuttgart for two important CTI conferences. In one room “Emission reduction systems for off-highway applications” were discussed, the another topic was “Diesel particulate filter - in the conflicting context of quality and costs“. This conference was more onroad orientated. Both forums were very important for HUSS, for the company covers the complete range of emission solutions in the first-fit and retrofit market both for „heavy duty“ onroad vehicles, and for all offroad applications. HUSS participated in the exhibition program common for both meetings and the head of R&D Dr. Hans-Jörg Rembor held a lecture.

Quality and trends for active filter systems
Basically the following main results can be extracted of the numerous lectures and discussions. Quality and toughness of the offered systems have got better and better over the years. This is really necessary, because the reliability over the lifetime of a vehicle should be given. The customers also expect longer maintenance intervals. HUSS is very well prepared for that with its especially robust SiC filter material.Further on the trend goes to wall-flow, active filter systems for being independent of the exhaust gas temperature for all vehicles of one series. HUSS has exclusively wall flow filters and offers 4 different active regeneration strategies.

Dr. Hans-Jörg Rembor followed these trends in his lecture and explained which solutions HUSS offers for the retrofit of trucks and buses in the more and more upcoming German environmental zones: The goal must be that the vehicles comply by retrofitting to the EURO 4 PM limit value in order to get the green sticker. Only this sticker allows in the long run access to the environmental zones. The silver bullet for this is a wall-flow particulate filter system which regenerates during the operation mode at low exhaust gas temperatures without exceeding the allowed exhaust gas backpressure and without using additives.

The HUSS MD system is able to regenerate at exhaust gas temperatures of 200°C (390°F). But this temperature is only necessary in 10% of the operation time. No problem for most of the vehicles. The Diesel post injection sprays some Diesel into the exhaust gas. This Diesel air mixture comes to an HC catalyst with a special coating. A chemical reaction in this catalyst increases the exhaust gas temperature above the soot ignition temperature of 550°C (1000°F).The heated exhaust gas then reaches the particulate filter to regenerate it.

Preparation of special filter kits
The MD system can replace the original muffler. HUSS offers special filter kits in the shape of the muffler for all vehicles, for which the filter system is released according to annex XXVII StVZO.The „easy way“ of getting single certifications, which some competitors have done in the past few months, are not allowed anymore.Decisive is the approval at one of the authorised Technical Control Boards and the certification by the Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA), federal motor transport authority of Germany according to annexXXVII StVZO.
